Kaliviani - general

Kaliviani is a romantic village near the sea with its hills and mountains. The sea is about 10 minutes away by foot with many olive groves around. Farmers growing herbs and vegetable, others have sheep and goats. A lot of old traditional houses are rebuilt and in good condition, other houses are new. People from all over Europe have found a new home here, but most of the residents are (thanks heaven!) still Greek – better: Cretan people! So the tolerance between different cultures is our daily lifestyle. Here you can see a BMW besides a donkey, a poor little home opposite a villa and the evil eye is still alive while the daughter studies at the university. The streets have no names or house numbers but the postman knows everyone. We do have a bus station and the school bus takes the children every morning to school, and taxi drivers bring them back home when school is over. We’ve had a rubbish skip for about 5 years and now we are connected (since winter 2007) to a recycling system. In Kaliviani modern life meets the past in a special lovely way.
